ROMAN CANDLE

18 July 2024

Baltimore pop renegades Ed Schrader’s Music Beat return today with a rollicking new single entitled ‘Roman Candle’. It’s a driving powerhouse of nervy basslines, guitar glimmer and rabble-rousing vocals, taken from the group’s forthcoming ‘Orchestra Hits’ album, out on Upset The Rhythm (Sep 20th).

‘Orchestra Hits’ is available to pre-order now now digitally or on CD and as a limited transparent-blue vinyl version too!

SCREENSAVER - NEW SINGLE + TOUR

What a fine day to share this new single from SCREENSAVER with the world! ‘Permanence’ is a terse thrill of a song, drawing on pent-up frustration and chronic intensity. ‘Permanence’ is out now digitally, including as this video that’ll make you wanna wield a baguette like a sword in future. Also just saying, not enough enough cat humanoids appear in music videos in general!

SCREENSAVER are hitting the autobahn in August, touring all over this Euro-portion of the globe, go see them if you can, their live show is wild! The band’s new album ‘Decent Shapes’ is out now on Upset The Rhythm too.

LOOM NO MORE!

14 June 2024

Massive moment today! Marcel Wave’s wonder of a debut album ‘Something Looming’ has unfurled into the world. These twelve immense songs are part trades club symphony, part itchy serenade and part wistful lament. Featuring the combined powerhouse talents of Sauna Youth and Cold Pumas players with the stunning addition of Maike Hale-Jones’ West Yorkshire brogue, Marcel Wave chronicle the hopes and dreams (often dashed) of the piping hot instant.

‘Something Looming’ is out now digitally and is also available on 180g black vinyl in all the best shops, including our own humble repository here.

Come join us tonight at MOTH Club in celebration of the record as the band, joined by The Pheromoans and The Plan treat us to a proper bash of an album launch.

PEG

5 June 2024

Marcel Wave’s stunning album ‘Something Looming’ comes out on June 14th, today we’re sharing pensive new single ‘Peg’. ‘Peg’ is an elegy for 1930’s actress Peg Entwistle and it’s accompanying vid is a technicolor tribute to her voiceless memory.

Come celebrate the release of ‘Something Looming’ with us at MOTH Club on Friday 14th June. Marcel Wave, The Pheromoans and The Plan will all be performing! Record launch o’clock!

EMPIRES INTO SAND

24 May 2024

Normil Hawaiians’ astonishing new album ‘Empires Into Sand’ is released today on digital platforms. CDs and LPs have arrived too, are they look / sound exceptional!

'Empires into Sand' is the first album of new material from Normil Hawaiians in 40 years. The group first refined their sound during the early 80s, hitting on a pastoral experimentalism that drew on ambient drone, motorik impulse and post-punk pep. 'Empires into Sand' came together in the familiar manner of their original three albums, with improvisation and nuance informing the blueprint of the tracks.

This is thought-provoking, boundary-bothering music. Honest in intent, a solidarity of vision. Listen and live! ‘Empires Into Sand’ is available to order from our webshop here.

PARSNIP - THE BABBLE & TOUR DATES

22 May 2024

Wow, this is the stuff that FUN is made of! Parsnip have an astonishing (and slightly psychotic) new video to share with you today for their latest single ‘The Babble’, they’re also coming on tour to Europe this October and playing London for us straight off the bat on October 1st at MOTH Club! You’re welcome!

Epic thanks to Puschen for whipping this tour into shape! Video made by Alex McLaren and filmed on the lands of the Wurundjeri people.

EARTH BALL - IT'S YOURS NOW!

17 May 2024

The sun has come out to shine on Earth Ball, check that spot-gloss on the sleeve!

Earth Ball’s immense album ‘It’s Yours’ is released today digitally and on this very fine crystal clear LP with printed inner sleeve, download card and accompanying painted art scrap from the band.

Musically this a mercurial record of energetic sax-flecked no wave spontaneity. Drums tumble over precipices, guitars grind along fluxing vortices and Jer & Izzy’s vocals usher wisdom and derision from the outskirts. Six mind-zapping transmissions from the Canadian underground trapped in aspic.

‘It’s Yours’ is available in all the best shops now, you can also pick up a copy from our webshop here ...or even better, grab a copy from the band directly when they tour the UK with Chris Corsano over the next fortnight:

STOP/CONTINUE

8 May 2024

Marcel Wave return with effervescent bop ‘Stop/Continue’ today, a punctual new single owing much to decaying industrial backdrops to childhood. ‘Stop/Continue’ dwells on derelict mills, spooling rivers and the unfaltering sweep of the second hand. We very much like songs with a heavy dose of rumination at UTR and if they come with a trippy video of waterways, tunnels and some dancing too, then all the better!

‘Stop/Continue’ is out now digitally, it features on Marcel Wave’s debut album ‘Something Looming’ out June 14th on Upset The Rhythm. Dive in!

MOON FM

30 April 2024

Moon FM is the scorching opening track of Earth Ball's debut LP 'It's Yours', out May 17th through Upset The Rhythm. The saxophone is searing hot here, pulling us through vortex after vortex whilst the drums pin down the momentum amid gauzily warped guitars. The accompanying video was shot by John Brennan from the band and features him walking backwards over the Cambie Bridge in Vancouver at twilight, only reversed so the traffic zips oddly backwards. Revel in it!

PARSNIP - OUT NOW!

26 April 2024

Greet today with Parsnip’s shining new album ‘Behold’!

The Australian group are an spirited ensemble, full of life, emotional complexity and humour. This has all contributed in making ‘Behold’ such a joy. This is their first album in five years and it’s a riot of dazzling performances and whip-smart DIY pop. Parsnip have made a record that drinks deep with wonderment and their vision is genuinely refreshing and at times devastatingly honest. We’re overjoyed to share it with you.

‘Behold’ by Parsnip is out now digitally and on crystal-clear vinyl through Upset The Rhythm. Our great mates at Anti Fade are releasing ‘Behold’ down under too. Parsnip will touring Japan next month and are also coming to Europe this October, watch out world!

NORTH ATLANTIC

25 April 2024

We’re sharing ‘North Atlantic’ with the world today! Another gem from the jewellery box that’s Normil Hawaiians first album of new material in 40 years. ‘North Atlantic' is the meditative closer on ‘Empires into Sand’ and features reworked drum samples taken from a short track called ‘South Atlantic’ from 1984 (Normil Hawaiians - What’s Going On?). Only this time the bass refrain is reversed and the song takes on an entirely new life with an uncanny string arrangement, birdsong and lyrics about impermanence, dream states and long shadows. Drink deep!

‘Empires into Sand’ will be released by Upset the Rhythm on May 24th.

MARCEL WAVE - SOMETHING LOOMING

4 April 2024

June 14th, what a prodigious day!

We will be releasing Marcel Wave’s inaugural album ‘Something Looming’, packed with eulogies for tragic actresses, ancient riverbeds and concrete obscenity. Marcel Wave (featuring members of Cold Pumas & Sauna Youth) are part trades club symphony, part itchy serenade and part wistful lament. This heady concoction of ‘Meades meets Pat-E-Smith meets Kirklees Borough Council’ will be formally baptised on stage at MOTH Club that very same day (June 14th) with an album launch (featuring The Pheromoans + The Plan), now on sale.

Check out their first single ‘Barrow Boys’, a raucous ode to the death of the docklands. Out now digitally and available to study in this suitably wavy VHS promo. ‘Something Looming’ will be released on June 14th by Upset The Rhythm and Feel It Records (in the USA). It is available to pre-order now on 180g black vinyl too.

PARSNIP - TURN TO LOVE

19 March 2024

Don’t turn back! Parsnip explode into colour, costume and creativity with their incredible video for new single ‘Turn To Love’. Out today digitally and featured on their forthcoming album ‘Behold’ (out April 26th through Upset The Rhythm). Blooming marvellous effort from the Australian DIY pop quartet!

EMPIRES INTO SAND

14 March 2024

Huge day today! Normil Hawaiians’ first new album in 40 years will be coming out on Upset The Rhythm on May 3rd. Titled ‘Empires into Sand’, the record is an incredible patchwork cloak of ideas drawing on ambient drone, motorik impulse, folk idiom and a certain cosmic uncanny.

A Windswept album recorded in a windswept Scottish coastal retreat, ‘Empires into Sand’ swims with short wave radio interference and overheard satellite transmissions. These are winding rivers of song, peopled with the displaced, determined, downhearted yet hopeful. Swirling atmospheres, field recordings, tape-looped drums, rapid synth flights and soaring vocals all abound in this echo from the now.

‘Empires into Sand’ will be released on gatefold LP, CD and digitally on May 24th, it is available to pre-order now from our shop now.

Lead single ‘Exiles’ is released today, exploring the continuous movement of human beings, check out the video for more sublime signs from the firmament.

EARTH BALL START ROLLING

12 March 2024

Arise! It's time to take on Earth Ball! Earth Ball are a wild ride of an ensemble from Nanaimo (Canada); spontaneous, instinctual and eruptive inside out. When Earth Ball fire up the amps in their basement you can hear the voices of ghosts hum through the speakers.

Kellan's hued feedback, Izzy's sturdy basslines, Jer's paperbag guitar tone and rumble pack zaps, Liam's sheets of sound and Brennen's multidirectional drums are expansive, restlessly inventive and truly psychedelic.

Their debut LP ‘It’s Yours’ will be coming out on May 17th via Upset The Rhythm. Take a first listen to ‘A Need To Cool Down’ and reframe your brain.

‘It’s Yours’ is available to pre-order on clear 180g vinyl w/ a hand-painted insert from the band now.

Earth Ball are also touring the UK this May in support of this release with their friend-in-sound Chris Corsano, see you at a show!

WYRD PSEARCH OUT TODAY!

1 March 2024

March comes in like a lion carrying a copy of ‘Wyrd Psearch’ by The Pheromoans! Released today, lucky album 13 from the lo-fi peddlers has been hailed by Uncut magazine as a “sleek return of droll social commentary and DIY invention”, whilst The Quietus urged “the ghost of Mark E. Smith to crown them the kings of the sprechgesang gang.” Wow!

We’re celebrating the release of the album today by sharing this video for ‘Twibbon Wife’, a track musing on the legacy of The Stone Roses, Ellis-Bextor and armchair occultists.

‘Wyrd Psearch’ is available now in all the best shops and our own webstore here.

Cafe OTO will host an official album launch next Tuesday with The Pheromoans, Apostille and Dean Rodney Jr & The Cowboys all performing, lucky us. The band will also appear on deXter Bentley’s Hello GoodBye show on Resonance FM tomorrow from noon to chat more about the release, enjoy!

BEHOLD... PARSNIP!

13 February 2024

Green shoots have burst forth from Parsnip! The Australian group have a super-catchy single out today called ‘The Light’, taken from their sophisticated sophomore album ‘Behold’.

Drawing comparisons with Dolly Mixture, Sara Goes Pop and Look Blue Go Purple, Parsnip are an animated ensemble, full of life, emotional complexity and humour. On ‘Behold’ they explore both the inner and outer realms of consciousness with quick wits and some seriously quality jangle and jolt. Take a listen to ‘The Light’, a whip smart workout if there ever was one!

Upset The Rhythm will release ‘Behold’ on April 26th. There’s a limited transparent vinyl edition, available to pre-order (drum roll please)… now.

FAITH IN THE PHEROMOANS

6 February 2024

The Pheromoans roll up their trouser and consult with the master mason today as they rebound with a second single from their glorious upcoming ‘Wyrd Psearch’ album. ‘Faith in the Future’ “cautiously tugs at a thread of certain patterns, mishearings and misinterpreted gestures” according to vocalist Russell Walker.

The song is complemented here by the visual recordings of 11-year-old Hitchin resident Rowan Walker and his keen eye for transportation. ‘Wyrd Psearch’ will be released on March 1st by Upset The Rhythm and is available to pre-order now.

WYRD PSEARCH

9 January 2024

'Wyrd Psearch' is available to pre-order now on 180g black vinyl. Remember to always check backwards on the diagonal!

Like Abba, but with way more tremolo and a scrutinising eye for the failings of power.

THE TOADS - DEBUT!

15 March 2023

Toads have no teeth so have to swallow their prey alive and in one gulp, they can’t hop or ribbit like frogs and they have been known to fall from the sky like rain when “weather gets weird!”

The Toads however are an extra-ace band from Melbourne who Upset The Rhythm are working with on their debut album ‘In The Wilderness’. Navigating the dross of modern life, whilst keeping one foot in a dream is the key to their nervy post-punk scuffle. Featuring members of The Shifters, The Living Eyes and Parsnip you’d be forgiven for guessing what The Toads sound like, but their mordant step and minor-key enchantment makes for an intriguing parry.

Today we’re releasing the group’s rapid first single ‘Nationalsville’, a rollicking toe-tapper of jaunty riffage, sprightly bass bounce and drums that get the blood pumping. Singer Miles' relentless observations spool through the song stitching together a glammy rush of monotony.

‘In the Wilderness’ will be released on June 9th through Upset The Rhythm, in partnership with our friends at Anti Fade Records. A limited edition sky-blue LP is available pre-order with glee here now!

TERRY - 'GRONKS' VIDEO

28 Feb 2023

Terry forgot to forget to remember! Terry’s new single ‘Gronks’ is about opportune wealth grabs, neo-imperialism and entrenched colonialism. Twiggy Forrest, Gina Rinehart, the ghosts of Macquarie, Flinders and Cook all sailing up the Parramatta River! “Greet me from the banks you gronks”!

‘Gronks’ is taken from Terry’s forthcoming album ‘Call Me Terry’, out on April 14th through Upset The Rhythm.

JOIN THE REVOLUTION!

3 February 2023

Upset The Rhythm's 150th release is propelled out into the world today, and it's an especially sprightly and nimble affair!

Historically F*cked's new album entitled ‘The Mule Peasants’ Revolt of 12,067’ is a tour de force of improvised, rock unhingement. Out now on 180g black vinyl, accompanied by some worrisome sleeve artwork this record is not mere Sedentary Rock but Blasted Basalt, Frog worshipping cave-funk, harmolodic hullabaloo-wop, a musical game of “badger in the bag”.

The Quietus hit the nail on the head this week when they said: "It sounds like an unstoppable party! Sure, one for a selective clientele, who dig Fluxus methodology and Skin Graft Records catalogue obscurities and the well-spoken goofballs of post-AMM British free music – but those people might just dance you squares under the table."

‘The Mule Peasants’ Revolt of 12,067’ is available to buy in all the best shops and our own webstore here! Join the revolution!

CALL ME TERRY

25 January 2023

Today you can hear their new single ‘Gold Duck’ and also pre-order the album on LP (180g red and black vinyl LP versions, CD and digital too), what a world! Terry says “Gold Duck is a song about how entitlement constrains change. Words are nice. Burn the flag."

Terry is ready, are you?

'Call Me Terry' is available to pre-order now on 180g red vinyl, black vinyl, CD and digital now, check out our shop here!

SHAKE CHAIN LP

REVOLTING MULE PEASANTS

2 December 2022

Three cheers! We’re working with Historically Fucked on their new album entitled (wait for it…) ‘The Mule Peasants’ Revolt of 12,067’. Out in early February this record is not mere Sedentary Rock but Blasted Basalt, Frog worshipping cave-funk, harmolodic hullabaloo-wop, a musical game of “badger in the bag”.

This is Rock and/or Roll as fertilizer, uncivilised and free, as if one were to imagine what the Plastic Ono Band would’ve hit upon if they had read ‘Riddley Walker’, the sound of an entire timeline of expression put back together back-to-front, misshapen and fully irradiated. ‘The Mule Peasants’ Revolt of 12,067’ is now available to pre-order on 180g black vinyl here!

29 April 2022

What luminous portent!

Today Upset The Rhythm releases Screensaver's astute-n-snappy double A-side 7" on yellow lambent vinyl. 'Clean Current' is a thrill of nervy guitar, motorik beat and echoed ennui: "This minute is eternity"! 'Repeats' is a moody sister track, a gothic post-punk stomp pushed ever onwards by a gritty sawtooth synth and ascendent vocal. Hyper-limited to just 150 copies worldwide this 7" is only available in the best of shops and from our very own mailorder.

CLEAN CURRENT

20 April 2022

Rock out in the kitchen! Here’s Screensaver’s domestic hi-five of a video for ‘Clean Current’! “ A hip-shaking certified bop” according to Post-Trash who just premiered the single-shot cavort! ‘Clean Current’ is out now digitally and next week on a yellow-fluoro 7” via Upset The Rhythm.

THE DUKE

11 April 2022

Check out Vintage Crop’s sprightly new single ‘The Duke’, a song about indecision and distraction and not so much about inheriting the duchy! Premiered today by the wonderful Raven Sings The Blues.

REPEATS OUT NOW!

8 April 2022

Screensaver’s moody post-punk stomper ‘Repeats’ is released today digitally, the flipside of their AA single with ‘Clean Current’! Led by a gritty sawtooth synth, chorus-splashed guitar, textural percussion and soaring vocals, ‘Repeats’ gleefully languishes in the repetition allotted to much of modern life.

‘Clean Current / Repeats’ will also be released by Upset The Rhythm on a fluoro-yellow 7” in the coming weeks.

HG20

KIBITZER!

17 March 2022

Geelong’s favourite sons Vintage Crop return this summer (June 24th) with their much-anticipated fourth album, ‘Kibitzer’. ‘Kibitzer’ sees the band define their field of play, more melodic at times, still bruising, forever droll. These ten tracks of ‘snappy as elastic’ Australian punk are packed with tensile riffage, hefty beats and witty refrains of everyman curiosity.

Today we’re sharing Double Slants with you, Vintage Crop’s first single from the ‘Kibitzer’. We’re also announcing that our pre-order for the album on sky-blue vinyl, black vinyl and CD is now up and running.

Dinked have kindly nurtured a lavish limited version of the LP on white vinyl with accompanying lyric zine, bookmark and live show flexi-disc! That can be chased down here.

CLEAN CURRENT

14 March 2022

Thanks Raven Sings The Blues! Screensaver’s neon flicker of AA single is announced today! Super limited quantities (150 copies) of these being made so well worth getting your pre-order on!

“Melbourne’s Screensaver follow quickly on their excellent album Expressions of Interest with a new single and the first cut out of the gate sees them sliding away from the darker corners of their debut and into a slackened, neon flicker of synth pop with a pogo pulse. With a crooked smile and a foaming wave of keys, the band cross-wires the maximalist sonic assault of Snapper with the nervy pounce of The Units or Starter.”

NICFIT - 'DEVIATION'

10 December 2021

Japanese group Nicfit have a restive (and decidedly not festive) new single out now called ‘Deviation’! Here’s the brilliantly tensile video. ‘Deviation’ is also streaming on all the usual digi-platz and features on the band’s debut LP ‘Fuse’, out Jan 14th through Upset The Rhythm.

KAPUTT - 'GONE WEST'

22 November 2021

Glasgow post-punks Kaputt return today with an early taste of their new album in the form of surprise digital single ‘Gone West’! A restless riot of sax breaks, fidgeting drums and guitar riffage that continually swims against the tide. Cal from Kaputt shared that “Gone West is about the migration of affluence, when industry clashed with the living standards of the wealthy. The smoke blows East, so the money moves West.” Such choice lyrical concerns and their pointed address are set off against ‘Gone West’s needling impulse to dance its way into your brain. ‘Gone West’ is just the tip of the iceberg though, Kaputt’s new album looks set to sink us all!

Kaputt will be going on tour this week check out our tour page for full info including their spell of dates with Squid in January.

Our third new addition to the webshop takes the form of Screensaver's 'Expressions of Interest' LP, trapped in 180g heavy black vinyl and hellbent on turning your mind ablaze with its moody synth punk moves. Wonderful to have this record in stock finally.

'BUY / SELL / TRADE'

22 October 2021

Huge thanks to Raven Sings The Blues for premiering Screensaver's brand new (and immediately vintage) video for 'Buy/Sell/Trade'.

"Melbourne's Screensaver serve up a new video reveling in VHS psychedelics & a UHF chyron clutter. With a heavy beatdown of electronic drums & nodding synth swirl that move in motorik motion, the band’s “Buy/Sell/Trade” is synth-punk bliss!"

Screensaver's debut album 'Expressions of Interest' is out now on Upset The Rhythm.

Seems somewhat surreal and infinitely exhilarating at the same time. Trash Kit will be bringing their 110% polyrhythmic joy to help kick off our renewed live programme, accompanied by their fierce choir and bonus violinist too. It’s a total trip to invite Es to play too for the first time since we released their debut album last year and with No Home opening the show we’re in for the mightiest of treats, lucky us!

Get busy!

Here’s ‘Vacant Street’, the second single from Philip Frobos’ forthcoming debut LP and novel ‘Vague Enough to Satisfy’! Released as digital single today, alongside ‘My Funny Valentine’ as the b-side, ‘Vacant Street’ is a fizzy trip of ‘Whammy’-era B52s groove, hooky basslines and enough muted meanderings to make you wanna join Philip in a sprightly skinny dip. Baker Street!

‘Vague Enough to Satisfy’ is released by Upset The Rhythm on LP, and published by Hex Enduction in novel form on October 1st. Look out!

CLEAR HISTORY

4 August 2021

What’s this? Another new release from up our busy sleeve! 'Solar Death Ray' is the debut single from Berlin group Clear History, a scorching post-punk trio intent on bringing a matchbox to the dancefloor. "Light a match and watch it drop, burn it down" they sing on this pulse-quickening single, which sounds equal parts Kleenex, Gang of Four and ESG.

'Solar Death Ray' is taken from the band's debut EP 'bad advice good people' out November 5th on Upset The Rhythm. Thanks to Ears To Feed for premiering the ‘Solar Death Ray’ video!

BERTIE MARSHALL - 'EXHIBIT'

28 July 2021

Make an exhibition of yourself! Bertie Marshall is best known as a punk memoirist, his book ‘Berlin Bromley’ is celebrated as an insider’s take on the lurid origins of punk. Bertie wasn’t just a face on the scene though, he also made music. Uncanny, mesmerising, affirming music!

From 1980-83, Bertie was the frontman for post-punk boundary-pushers Behaviour Red - they released one single, did a mini-tour and promptly broke up. Their sound was characterised by experimentation and drama, boasting at times tribal drumming, searing vocals, dazed guitars and feedback. Bertie continued sketching out atmospheric compositions afterwards too, walking a tightrope between bewildered pop and gothic folk. Central to everything is Bertie’s commanding voice; heartfelt, at times strident, always truthful.

This Halloween, Upset The Rhythm will release the fruits of Bertie Marshall's resolute labour. Entitled 'Exhibit', this debut album gathers Bertie’s exuberant songs together for the first time. ‘Exhibit’ will be released on limited 180g black vinyl, CD and digitally too. Today we’re releasing the single ‘Shaking Johnny’ to whet your appetite!

RATTLE - PERFECT SOUNDS

23 July 2021

James Acaster invited Isy Suttie onto his Perfect Sounds show to discuss Rattle's "totally engulfing" debut album 'Rattle'. Find out how "drumming is like snowboarding" and how Rattle made a "refreshing change" of an album by "serving their songs first by using percussion as a voice". Total proof that 2016 was the greatest year for music ever!

VAGUE ENOUGH TO SATISFY

21 July 2021

Send those parcels flying! Today we’re sharing the exciting news that Philip Frobos will release his debut solo album ‘Vague Enough to Satisfy’ with Upset The Rhythm on October 1st. This exquisite, lounge-inspired punk album acts as an original soundtrack to his debut novel of the same name (published by Hex Enduction Books).

‘No Packages Today’ is the sprightly first single from the album, proceeding with a hooky bassline, the cryptic sort that Frobos is known for as a member of Atlanta post-punks Omni. Sounding like the Au Pairs and Suicide refining an obsession with Bowie’s ‘Lodger’, Frobos opines “I’m afraid that you need more than I can offer”, bedecked by shuffling beats and burgeoning waves of saxophone. Here’s the full video, we promise to treat all pre-orders (including those bundled with the book) a lot better than Philip would seemingly!

‘Vague Enough to Satisfy’ is available or order now from our webshop.

DARK WORLD COMING!

13 July 2021

Best news! This September we’re releasing ‘Dark World’ by Normil Hawaiians, a compilation documenting the group’s formative years of 79-81. Covering acres of ground from peppy post-punk origins into the progressively wayward, dubbier territories, ‘Dark World’ gathers the group’s energetic 7” singles on Dining Out and Illuminated Records, their metamorphic ‘Gala Failed’ EP (Red Rhino) and a lively last-minute Peel session from 1980, alongside outtakes, rarities and demos.

‘Dark World’ is a snapshot of Normil Hawaiians in flux, finding their feet, stretching their limbs. These 22 tracks display all the glittering debris from their magpie’s nest of sound. Emergent, hopeful and resistant in both music and ethic.

Upset The Rhythm will release ‘Dark World’ on LP, CD and digitally on September 24th. It is available to pre-order in our webshop as of… now!

NEW UTR SHIRT & BADGES

12 July 2021

Our brand new 'Tools of the Trade' Upset The Rhythm t-shirt and 'Foggy eye / Foggy moon' badges are now available to purchase in our webshop, oooooooh!

ONWARDS & UPWARDS

14 May 2021

Today we jubilantly release Kaputt's 'Movement Now' / 'Another War Talk' EP. The Scottish six-piece have always dazzled us, zipping up their songs with a dizzy vim, lyrical punch and their own particular fidgety finesse but on this record they sound nigh thunderous. Framed by demands for much-needed change both tracks on this new record topple you headfirst into their serpentine tumult of sound.

'Movement Now' / 'Another War Talk' takes up its rightful place, front and centre of all the best record shops, as of today. It is available to stream through usual channels, whilst the brightly spinning blue 7" can also be sourced from own webshop here!

RELEASING THE POWER OF ROCKS

7 May 2021

Did you know there are eleven differently flavoured songs to choose from the Buffet Lunch? Blow the dust off that large plate and form an orderly queue because the Scots magpie-minded post-punks release their debut album on Upset The Rhythm today! Buffet Lunch line their nests with only the finest skittish riffage, poignant tangents and leaping absurdity. 'The Power of Rocks' is the glorious upshot, a goliath of wonky pop, frolicking in the melodic landslide of our dormant cerebella.

Available now on orange vinyl and digitally, 'The Power of Rocks' brims with nervy energy throughout its peculiar patchwork. These songs are gleefully led by a giddy compass but they also own their fair share of emotional heft at times too. 'The Power of Rocks' can be found looming in all the best record shops now and also in our very own webshop here.

DISCO SEAWEED

3 March 2021

Get ready to dance to your favourite derogatory demographics! Here's Buffet Lunch's befuddlingly brilliant video for 'Pebbledash', out now digitally and taken from their scorching debut album 'The Power of Rocks', released May 7th through Upset The Rhythm.

THE POWER OF ROCKS

27 January 2020

Power up! Our first new release of 2021 will be a debut album of odd-pop from Scottish group Buffet Lunch! Punchy, often thoughtful and pleasingly surreal at times 'The Power of Rocks' is an album filled with imagery and humour, packed with zestful tunes and lyrical weight too. Buffet Lunch's songs are vigorous excursions, meandering into clattersome terrain as often as hiking up into the breezy, melodious foothills. The desire to lead the listener along on a curious tale helps tie things together. This is a debut LP of wide-ranging and personal themes, from irritation with out of touch politicians, to love letters to seaside living, to even the frailty and confusion of old age. No stone left unturned, if you pardon the pun. 'Red Apple Happiness' is the first single taken from the album, it's befuddlingly magnificent video (made by Iain McCall) just premiered on For The Rabbits.

'The Power of Rocks' is available to pre-order now through our online shop on limited 180g orange vinyl!

HELLO SHIMMERING BASSET!

30 October 2020

The Green Child's arresting new record 'Shimmering Basset' is released today on Upset The Rhythm! We’ve pressed this elegant album of electronic invention and 'daydreams in a new home' up as a special eco-minded edition: recycled card for the sleeve and inserts, natural dyes, compostible outer-sleeve and reclaimed 180g vinyl too, as green as it gets for The Green Child.

The Green Child have really climbed a ladder with 'Shimmering Basset', delivering a robust album of compelling melody, expanded vision and melancholic grandeur. These are songs that fully inhabit themselves, unfurling into a redolent dreamscape, subtly handled with poise and finesse. For our last UTR release of 2020 we’re going out on a high!

FRESCO SHED OPEN TO THE PUBLIC

23 October 2020

Sleeper & Snake invite you through the door of their ‘Fresco Shed’! Upset The Rhythm released the Melbourne duo’s new album today on popping blue vinyl and a sturdy black version too. Homespun vignettes of warbled keyboards, fizzed improv interludes, shifting layers of skewed harmony and wistful yet pointed lyrical pep is their measure. There’s a delicacy at play here too with cello, harmonica and even sarangi being employed in the foundation of these frothy concoctions of outsider folk and post punk hodgepodge.

Available to stream everywhere now + buy from all the best shops and our webstore!

SOHO RADIO SPECIAL

10 October 2020

Hold on to your party hats! Upset The Rhythm has a Soho Radio special available for your ears. Lots of crucial tracks from the past/present/future, plus insightful chat with Sleeper & Snake about Tudor buildings and Guy Smith from Normil Hawaiians on performing in Switzerland in the 80s. Also, we have The Green Child booked in to discuss extreme horticulture and their fave band Hot Chocolate, whilst Naked Roommate just do their own loopy dada cut and paste interview thing! Listen up!

LIVE FROM THE FRESCO SHED

6 October 2020

Sleeper & Snake treat us to a new video today, recorded live in lockdown from the Fresco Shed, here's 'Shoot Through'! The trains were filmed between Richmond and Flinders Street stations and the layering fx in the video were inspired by those gracing the Granada TV footage of Joy Division performing Shadowplay in 1978. 'Shoot Through' is taken from the band's forthcoming 'Fresco Shed' album, out soon on Upset The Rhythm.

THE GREEN CHILD IN THE 'FASHION LIGHT'

17 September 2020

Thanks to Gorilla Vs Bear for helping us announce The Green Child's new single 'Fashion Light'! Available to stream everywhere now, taken from the avant-pop duo's incredible, forthcoming ‘Shimmering Basset’ album, out in October.

IN THE STONE 7"

11 September 2020

What a day! The first new music from Normil Hawaiians for 35 years has arrived in the form of a 7". Today we released 'In The Stone / Where Is Living?', the fruitful upshot of a recording session in a windswept, coastal house on the Kintyre peninsula.

'In The Stone' is a motorik thrill of distorted guitars, locked rhythms and morphic resonance. Guy Smith is joined by Zinta Egle on vocals, skilfully sharing lyrics informed by place, meaning and recurrent memory. In keeping with the context of the song, sounds from several previous live recordings of the track were woven into its present being. Flipside 'Where is Living?' is a decidedly more diaphanous affair of questioning lyrics and eerie traces, droning strings and impressions smudged. Progressive, wordly and imbued with a cosmic uncanny this pair of songs is a tantalising glimpse of Normil Hawaiians now, an echo from the past, an echo from the future.

Available as a limited edition 7" from all the best shops and our webstore here

DO THE DUVET

4 September 2020

Naked Roommate's knockout of a debut album is released today! 'Do The Duvet', reminds us of Vivien Goldman meets Liquid Liquid, with some frazzled electronics worthy of Vanity Records thrown in for good measure.

The quartet from Oakland, California are time capsule brilliant, with the album sounding like it was unearthed from a biscuit tin planted in the ground circa 1981, boasting just the right amount of water-damage warble. 'Do the Duvet' sparks with originality though, whipping up twitchy, congealed grooves for Amber Sermeno's vocal to ride high atop, making for an alluring yet switchblade-dangerous performance in terms of wit and gaze. Available in all the best shops and our webstore here too

THE GREEN CHILD RETURNS

27 August 2020

Spectral pop o'clock! The Green Child return with an epic new album in October called 'Shimmering Basset'. The Green Child is the once long-distance, now based in the same house recording project of Raven Mahon (furniture maker and former member of Grass Widow) and Mikey Young (recording engineer and band member of Total Control, Eddy Current Suppression Ring). The band's self-titled album was a highlight of 2018 for us!

Here's the video for first single 'Low Desk : High Shelf' a classy slice of avant pop with Mikey’s synths criss-crossing through the straight-up beat, allowing Raven’s collected vocal to stitch its haunted path: “see the face and feel your body sway, in voluntary walk, intoxicating view, take it home, a photograph, a file final form, a token for the shelf or wait…”

Special thanks to Raven Sings The Blues for premiering the single, now available of all digital platforms. ‘Shimmering Basset’ is available to pre-order now in our webshop as a special eco-minded edition of the LP.

THE NEW NORMIL

17 August 2020

We're ecstatic to share with you today the news that Normil Hawaiians will be releasing their first new music since 1985 with Upset The Rhythm next month. Choosing the form of a 7" in which to appear, September 11th will witness the release of 'In The Stone / Where Is Living?'. The band encamped to Tayinloan, a small village on the west coast of the Kintyre peninsula in Scotland to set up their own studio in an isolated, windswept house overlooking the sea and started the tape rolling. The resultant 'In The Stone' 7” is a tantalising glimpse of Normil Hawaiians now, an echo from the past, an echo from the future.

This will be the band's only show of 2020 and your only chance to see the band on stage this year playing tracks from the new record alongside that back catalogue of classic epics. SLEEPER & SNAKE RELEASE!

28 July 2020

Here's the catchiest song about corrupt, deregulated housing development you'll hear all year! Sleeper & Snake unveil their first single 'Flats Falling'! Sleeper & Snake are Amy Hill and Al Montfort, staunch champions of the Aus-underground, writing homespun, mordant watercolour pop. Warbled keys, fizzy sax interludes and pointed lyrical pep all at hand.

'Flats Falling' is a crystalline assembly of cello, drum machine and plucky bass which freewheels around, curlicues of sax sparking off amid the duo's matter-of fact vocal parade: "Disclaimer, disclaimer, disclaimer. The place has a curse."

Forthcoming album 'Fresco Shed' is out on Sept 25th, a total triumph of substance over style from an endlessly creative duo determined on surprising all (themselves included) with each new song. Pre-order up now, including a highly limited baby-blue vinyl option.

NAKED ROOMMATE RECORD

25 June 2020

Roll on September 4th! We’ll be releasing ‘Do The Duvet’, the debut album from Naked Roommate. The Oakland quartet evoke the playful spirit of Vivien Goldman, Vanity Records and Liquid Liquid, whilst sparking with originality, all frazzled beats, devolved guitar work and minced electronic compost. The resultant congealed grooves are heaven-sent concoctions for Amber Sermeńo’s vocal to ride high atop, making for an alluring yet switchblade-dangerous performance in terms of wit and gaze.

Take a listen to wondrous first single 'Mad Love’. All proceeds from the track (this month and next) will be donated between People’s Breakfast Oakland and the Anti Police-Terror Project FYI.

‘Do The Duvet’ is available to pre-order on lemon-yellow vinyl now! Our friends at Trouble in Mind are releasing a version in the US too.

VINTAGE CROP SERVED UP

11 June 2020

Look out August 7th! We'll be releasing 'Serve To Serve Again' by Vintage Crop! A crusher of an album from the Geelong Aus-punks, their full-pelt bounce tempered with flailing guitar lines and sardonic commentary.

Have a listen to first track 'Gridlock' now, a timely nod to frustration - “the hustle and bustle of inner-city traffic is driving me nuts because the radios on static”. The most vigorous, glorious racket imaginable!

Available to pre-order on 180g white vinyl now.

KAPUTT OUT TODAY!

27 September 2019

Today we release Kaputt's energetic corkscrew of a debut album 'Carnage Hall' in all its feverish, intuitive glory! Hailing from Glasgow, Kaputt race away with the playful torn edge of no-wave song, blurting out tracks with twitchy charisma, their catchy riffs circle with relish, allowing timely sax stonks and stop-start rhythms to drive things on. Vocals leap, guitars bluster and always the saxophone snakes, hypnotically drawn through the erratic beat.

There's a riot of fun at play in Kaputt's febrile racket, but there's also some deeply cerebral grooves and choice lyrical concerns evident too. 'Carnage Hall' is available on 180g vinyl in all good shops and from our webstore now!

The title track video just premiered on Clash: "a blistering slice of outsider songcraft with a vivid extra-dimensional pop element", whilst Raven Sings The Blues were kind enough to host his brand new 'Mister' video: "a fuzz-beset pop-skimmer, slinging twang and jangle equally!" Enjoy!

KAPUTT ARRIVE AT CARNAGE HALL

29 July 2019

KAPUTT are a recently hatched post punk act from Glasgow, Scotland. Racing away from the playful torn edge of no-wave song, Kaputt blurt out tracks with twitchy charisma, their catchy riffs circle with relish, allowing timely sax stonks and stop-start rhythms to drive things on. Vocals leap, guitars bluster and always the saxophone snakes, hypnotically drawn through the erratic beat. There's a riot of fun at play in their febrile racket, but there's also some deeply cerebral grooves and choice lyrical concerns evident too.

The songs on 'Carnage Hall', Kaputt's debut album released by Upset The Rhythm this September, were influenced by the maelstrom of political hypocrisy and confusion in the air, the offbeat happenchance of life in 2019, notions of surveillance, identity (personal as well as the biscuit-tin styled persona of the Scottish Highlands), industrialisation and family. In short a total corkscrew of an energetic album! 'Carnage Hall' is available to pre-order in our webshop now!

'Carnage Hall' is available to pre-order now in our webshop!

SOTELO RETURNS

26 July 2019

Cosmic pop melodist Robert Sotelo returns this September with his most expansive album yet! 'Infinite Sprawling' is Sotelo's first record since relocating from London to Glasgow and partly inspired by his new city's inclusive and collaborative musicverse. Recorded with Ruari MacLean (of Vital Idles, Golden Grrrls) and Edwin Stevens (Irma Vep, Yerba Mansa) at their home studio Namaste Sound, 'Infinite Sprawling' grew out of Sotelo's sketchbook of skeletal songs, with MacLean and Stevens developing their own drum, guitar and keyboard parts. These songs pulled together like a wakeful stretch on a Sunday morning, flowering with a lightness of touch, sounding both carefree and brisk. Check out 'Message Of Beauty', the video for the first single from the album! A relaxed ballad of drowsy farewells, swoons of violin and swirled clouds of organ drone, take a listen.

'Infinite Sprawling' is available to pre-order on dark-green 180g vinyl now at in our webshop.

'WHO'S TERRY?' RELEASED!

19 July 2019

Today Melbourne post-punk wags Terry return with their new EP 'Who's Terry?' on Upset The Rhythm. Following on from last year's huge-sounding 'I'm Terry' album, this third 7" EP from the band brings you right up to date with their wobbly politico-pop. 'Who's Terry?' encapsulates what Terry does best, the queasy marriage of the upbeat and traumatic, the catchy instant and the nagging distance. Their alliterative lyrics always sharp as tacks, their sense of melody and beat sunk deep in the heart of now.

'Who's Terry?' is available now on black vinyl in our webshop!

LUNCH LADY - ANNOUNCING 'ANGEL'

12 July 2019

We're over the harvest moon to announce that we'll be releasing Lunch Lady's debut album on August 23rd! Lunch Lady are a sparky group from Los Angeles redolent of the desert heat, pining hearts and that chorus-soaked cloak of sound held dear by followers of British early 80s post-punk. Numbering four, Lunch Lady consist of Rachel Birke (vocals), Juan Velasquez (guitar), Victor Herrera (bass) and Robert Wolfe (drums). The band began in 2017 when Velasquez asked Birke if she'd like to start a new music project with him, their respective other groups Abe Vigoda and Heller Keller having co-existed in LA's DIY orbit. Birke explains that they "immediately decided upon making the new band a kind of love letter to Kitsch." Lunch Lady's dreamy punk forays into country ballad territory certainly swoop into sentiment, but its the melancholy of artifice that defines their outlook.

Here's the band's first video, 'Window', a track that whirls by with all the flourish of a card trick! Lunch Lady's debut album 'Angel' is available to pre-order in our webshop now!

28 June 2019

Constant Mongrel's rollicking new 'Experts In Skin' record greets the world today! Here's the riotous aforementioned 7" trying to turn the lights on in broad daylight! Classic!

'Experts in Skin' is the Melbourne bands' little sister follow-up to 2018's 'Living In Excellence' LP. The A side single holds the familiar post-post punk angst Constant Mongrel is known for, only building ever higher with a triple saxophone flurry and singer Tom Ridgewell's mutters on the often awkward nature of mainstream consumerism.

HYGIENE RELEASED!

24 May 2019

Upset The Rhythm releases 'Private Sector' today! The long-awaited second album from Hygiene. 'Private Sector' runs riot with brooding melodies, choppy, politically-pointed songs all delivered in their pugnacious yet often droll style. Time is taken to stride down the Holloway Road and through its footnotes, whilst fixations on buses and trains rub shoulders with metropolitan elites. Hygiene take swipes at tax havens, privatisation and the neoliberal madness of utility cartels, but they also choose to look at zealous fitness regimes, dodgy cover-ups and the very fabric of Englishness too. "Keep calm and carry on aaaaaaaaaaaargh!"

WHO'S TERRY?

22 May 2019

NOTS AND RED CHANNEL RELEASES!

10 May 2019

We're thrilled to share with you two new records out today on Upset The Rhythm. Red Channel's debut 7" and Nots electrifying new album '3' are both champing at the bit, synth pop to punk landslides both! '3' by Nots collects ten colossal songs into a dark, unpredictable, bold tour de force of a third record from the Memphis three. Pressed up on yellow and black 180g vinyl and available on CD and digitally too, Nots have infused '3' with a raucous intensity and improvisational energy that peels the paint from the walls.

Red Channel's 'Crazy Diamonds' 7" displays a willingness to wake-up in the unreal and see each moment reflected in the mirror. The Los Angeles' five-piece united through a shared post-punk sensibility and began experimenting with some angular drum and guitar give-and-take, layered with dueling keyboard refrains. It's an exhilarating rush of a song, both wistful, defiant and now stamped into black plastic!

DRECKSOUND OUT TODAY

26 April 2019

See how the sun shines on Hash Redactor's bruising debut album 'Drecksound', out today through Upset The Rhythm! Check out the whole record on Spotify now!

HYGIENE RETURN THIS MAY!

10 April 2019

Hygiene are back this May with their new album 'Private Sector'! This album finds them confronting the grim realities of the present, railing against the neoliberal madness of utility cartels, tax havens and privatised railways, seizing the moment as the current period of interregnum sees the old ideological certainties come into question. Proving nostalgia to be an inescapable trap, the band continue to hearken back to the kind of post-punk that existed before anybody knew to affix the 'post' prefix. The Quietus have just helped us announce the album with the first track 'Replacement Bus', all aboard!

18 March 2019

We're releasing the debut 7" record by Red Channel this April 19th! Red Channel are five like-minds from Los Angeles who decided to start writing snappy, impactful songs together in early 2017. United through a shared post-punk sensibility they began experimenting with some angular drum and guitar give-and-take, layered with duelling synth refrains. Over this Melody and Casey worked-up their vocal harmonies through impulse. The pairs vocals drift through each track, punctuating the profound and guiding us through each song's uncanny terrain.

This stunningly-crafted, detailed deep-listen arrives in shops today on CD, 180g heavyweight black vinyl and digitally. Our webshop is shipping now! 'Sequence' is composed of just four tracks, each clocking in around 10 mins and focused squarely on a deeper resonance with the creative act, illustrative of how ideas build from scratch, of how music can grow out of repetition. VITAL IDLES DEBUT ALBUM RELEASED!

1 June 2018

Vital Idles' remarkable debut album 'Left Hand' is released through Upset The Rhythm today! Hailing from Glasgow, Vital Idles mark out their sound within a chalk circle of first-though/best-though lyrical vision and primal-pop momentum. Here's what some adroit critics thought of the album . . .

BEAT

"Debut album, Left Hand, is something of a stripped to the bones statement of intent."

Brooklyn Vegan

"Splits the difference between Veronica Falls' moody jangle and The Pastels' detuned charm."

Clash

"a superb one chord thrash, somewhere between the oblique minimalist pop of Flying Nun and early Rough Trade signings such as The Raincoats."

The Skinny

"It's a taut, propulsive exercise in minimalism that doesn't waste a moment, barrelling across a series of vignettes tackling issues like one's place in the world, social complacency and the nature of music itself."

Available to order from our webshop and all great record shops as of now!

A quasi-future-medieval look to their costume ties in with references made later in the song to the book Riddley Walker. TWO NEW RELEASES OUT TODAY

20 November 2015

Today, our new records by The Wharves and Normil Hawaiians are hitting the shelves of shops near you.

'Return Of The Ranters' by Normil Hawaiians was originally recorded in 1985, and it’s taken 30 years to see a proper release for this lost magnum opus.

Their music is a hypnotic swirl of improvised avant-punk drifts and hymned mantras.

And it's keeping good company, as The Wharves 7" also released today sounds equally outstanding.

Side A boasts the plaintive yet powerful track "NAZ", while "My Will" on the flipside takes us back to a wintry past life, sounding practically medieval in its quietude.

You can take a listen to both in our new releases mixtape below.

NORMIL HAWAIIANS STREAMING AT THE WIRE

15 October 2015

You can stream Normil Hawaiian's forthcoming album, 'Return Of The Ranters', in full right now over at The Wire.

Originally written and recorded in 1985, the album is finally seeing a release next month on Upset The Rhythm.

It's already been described by Uncut as a "state-of-the-country address born of and directly critiquing Thatcher's iron grip on Britain".

You can find out more about the band and this remarkable record on our new Normil Hawaiians page, or start listening now at The Wire.

SPRAY PAINT'S 'CUSSIN'

17 July 2014

Our latest release is imminent - a fierce EP from Austin, Texas no wave punk outfit, Spray Paint.

Available on 7" or digitally, it's a solid slab of repeato-rock rapture - buzz-sawing guitars run headlong through labyrinthine tunnels of reverb, chased down by some wildly brain-bashing drums and a three-way jostle for the words.

You can pre-order it now in the shop, ready for shipping on August 11, or take a listen over at SoundCloud.

'HALO HALO' OUT TODAY

8 July 2013

Halo Halo are three friends living in South London, writing a primal, hyper-melodic music that makes you want to dance into the mountains and throw a rope around the moon.

We're delighted to be releasing their eagerly-awaited, self-titled debut album today - you can get your hands on a copy over in the shop.

The album showcases their shared love of the naturalism of folk music and the freedom of punk.

But the 12 tracks are also shot through in clattering technicolour with traditional forms of Filipino music - the band are named after a very colourful, refreshing hotchpotch of a dessert from the Philippines, where Rachel Horwood's (vocals, banjo, also of the band Trash Kit) family are from.

You can read and hear more here or watch the video for "Taro Taro Taro" below for a glimpse of the album's sound.

CHESTER ENDERSBY GWAZDA'S 'SHROUD'

24 June 2013

Our latest release is out today and you can order it in the shop right now.

It's the 'Shroud' LP from Baltimore resident and in-demand producer, Chester Endersby Gwazda. Chester began quietly writing and recording an ever-growing personal catalogue of pop-centric gems amidst his busy schedule realising the visions of others.

These songs have grown into his debut album 'Shroud', which is full of vocal harmonies, meticulous arrangements and precise timbres that bespeak his sensitive ear and fascination with pop music.

You can listen to 'Skewed' below to see what we mean - a track Pitchfork quite rightly describes as "trembling with vitality".

ANNOUNCING YARD PARTY

9 June 2013

We're super excited to announce YARD PARTY - a three day music festival taking place at Hackney Wick's tremendous and intrepid Yard Theatre in August.

It'll focus on a wide variety of international underground music, from folk to noise by way of damaged romantic pop - scroll down for the full line-up.

YARD PARTY's intention is to haul the DIY concert out of its expected parameters and into 'interesting pastures new' - to enhance the potency of the music and its effect on the audience, and to deconstruct the passive nature of what witnessing live music in 2013 shouldn't be.

The festival will take place on Thursday 15 and Friday 16 August from 5:00 to midnight, and then on Saturday 17 August from noon to midnight, all-dayer style.

Tickets are £33 for the weekend, or £12, £10 and £15 for each day - you can buy them now.

You can pick up a copy from all good record shops or our own webstore, or visit Dazed for a stream of the whole thing.

With the synth/drums duo treading a tightrope between underground punk and dance music, the album is full of cloaked anthems as likely to open celestial gates with keys of repetition as to soundtrack a Dark Age future.

ED SCHRADER'S MUSIC BEAT IN EUROPE

28 October 2012

When I'm In My Car | Sermon

OUT NOW - THE PHEROMOANS & FUTURE ISLANDS

3 September 2012

We have two new records out today and thought you might like a quick preview.

The Pheromoans' 'Does This Guy Stack Up?' is in the shop on both heavyweight LP, which is limited to 500 copies, and CD.

The album sees the deadpan DIY six piece take a slight departure from their sound of old. The songs lean into a more pop-balanced realm and the band's experimental tape collage approach sounds more natural than ever. Here's the video for "Grab a Chair".

Meanwhile, 'Tomorrow / The Fountain' from Future Islands' is available on a lovely white 7".

"Tomorrow" is a soulful swoon, its light tread is mesmerising amongst the slow burning synth cycles and relaxed bass progress, while "The Fountain" is a luscious narrative sunk into a slow dance. Take a listen below.

'JAZZ MIND' OUT NOW

25 June 2012

Out today, our latest release is 'Jazz Mind' from Ed Schrader's Music Beat, who The Wire describe as "a crazily interesting Baltimore duo using bass, drum and vocals to do something very pummelsome in a punk way without cowtowing to any of the genre's cliches."

The record is available on digipack CD and white LP (take a look at some pics on the blog) for £10 in the shop.

To whet your appetite, here's a new video for the sprawlingly awesome "When I'm In A Car". And if you want to catch them live, they're on tour in the US throughout July and August - full dates here.

UTR'S 'KINGDOM TOUR'

18 January 2012

WAY THROUGH'S 'ARROW SHOWER'

2 October 2011

Way Through's debut album 'Arrow Shower' is due to hit record stores on Monday 10 October and is available for pre-order via our shop right now.

This pastoral punk duo - originally from Shropshire, now residing in London - are informed by the field as much as the flyover. They write songs which phase in and out with guitar, tapes, damaged drums and vocals.

Using wrong-footed repetition, rapid interplay and free-looping happenstance, 'Arrow Shower' is a ragged yet intuitive tapestry of sound, with songs that walk the streets of market towns, wait forever at bus stops and lose themselves in edgelands.

We're hosting a free, record release party too on Friday at The Victoria in Dalston, with a super line-up of supports and guest DJs.

But if you can't wait until then to hear them, here's the video for "Gallant Show". It captures the Abbots Bromley Horn Dance - a ritual that's taken place in the Staffordshire village each September since 1226.

"OUT OF RUINS" VIDEO

29 August 2011

Here's a new video for KIT's song 'Out Of Ruins', taken from their recent album 'Invocation' on Upset The Rhythm.

The 16mm film by Steven Andrew Garcia sees a Predator-masked kid with a guitar-smashing complex trailing around Los Angeles fulfilling his primal urge to destroy.

If you like what you see and hear, 'Invocation' is in the shop right now.

YES WAY!

11 July 2011

We're very pleased to announce that we're holding our weekend festival, YES WAY, for the third time on Friday 12 - Sunday 14 August.

Building on the success of the last two year's sold out events, it will see 45 bands, representing the length and breadth of the British Isles, perform over two stages at Peckham art hub, The Bussey Building.

There'll also be a temporary DIY supermarket, tasty local and vegan food, and The Bussey Building's own rooftop barbeque.

Full line-up details are over at the YES WAY mini site.

JOHN MAUS' 'HEAD FOR THE COUNTRY'

23 June 2011

'Head For The Country' is the pivotal track from John Maus' eagerly anticipated third album 'We Must Become The Pitiless Censors Of Ourselves' which is released on Monday.

It was one of the last songs to make the album and with its elegiac disco bounce it leaves a lasting impression, meditating on human beings seeking salvation in the great outdoors.

John's just released the video for the song, directed by Jennifer Juniper Stratford. It sees him heading out into snowy Minnesotan edgelands, driving to a mysterious radar base and communicating with space via flashing auras and spinning satellites.

You can check it out below, download the MP3 here and pre-order the CD and LP over in the shop. John's also on tour in the US right now - full details follow.

'NO BABIES' OUT TODAY

2 May 2011

Our newest record hits shops far and wide, as well as our humble webstore, today. It's No Babies self-titled debut LP.

This five piece friend army from Oakland, California have worked tirelessly since 2008 to develop a unique 'new punk' sound influenced by jazz, art music and hardcore, not unlike Old Skull playing Schoenberg, while Magma heckles from the audience.

The record perfectly showcases their chaotic abandon in fantasy pink 180g glitter vinyl, with a heavy card reverse board sleeve featuring puppets and models that were made by the band to demonstrate the corruption of power through time.

It's £10 postage paid in the UK.

KIT ON TOUR

18 March 2011

KIT are beginning a short jaunt around Europe this weekend in support on their latest UTR album 'INVOCATION'.

They were recently described by Rob Barber of High Places as "a strange intersection where Void meet Incredible String Band". This gives some insight into their wonderful muddling of genres - fast, short, defiant songs that mess with the ideas of pop music and wayward punk.

They'll be landing in London on March 22 and 28, with full dates as follows:

20.03 - Leeds - Packhorse
21.03 - Glasgow - Stereo
22.03 - London - The Lexington

NEW JOHN MAUS DUE IN JUNE

2 March 2011

John Maus, the Minnesotan pop enigma, returns this June with his eagerly awaited third album entitled 'We Must Become the Pitiless Censors of Ourselves'.

We'll be releasing the album in the UK, Europe, Australia and Japan on June 27, while North America will get it a day later via new imprint Ribbon Music.

The record breaks new ground for Maus, with the shirt pulling and air punching of his impassioned live performance finally captured in all its frenzied appeal alongside a tender inner space.

As a sneak preview, new track "Quantum Leap" is now available below or via iTunes. It's a song full of dead zones, glancing slaps and oscillating solos.

"Heart to heart, mind to mind, we are the ones who seem to travel through time," intones Maus resolutely through the mist.

For further information about the release, plus imminent live dates at SXSW and across the UK and Europe, click here.

ANNOUNCING SPAGHETTI TREE

17 February 2011

April Fools' Day is an often maligned time of the year. Since the times of Chaucer the day has persisted in the unravelling of sanity, practical jokes and tomfoolery, even though nowadays we're lucky to notice a hoax in the papers before all fun is culled by noon.

This is why we have decided to celebrate the day in style, restoring the event to its anarchic origins with a 48 hour spectacle of fun and music taking place in Peckham Rye's old cricket bat factory, The Bussey Building.

The two day event is entitled Spaghetti Tree in homage to the 1957 Panorama broadcast which fooled the nation.

On Friday 1 April we're lucky enough to have US sonic eccentrics Dan Deacon and John Maus throwing down the gauntlet to the UK's finest keyboard-weirding acts including PLUG, Munch Munch and Design A Wave. After the revels we'll lead a procession into the darkness of the Rye in an attempt to see one of William Blake's childhood visions of an angel in a tree.

The next day things get blown further apart as logic continues to be defied, this time with No Age, Japanther, Ducktails, Ignatz, Please, Peepholes, Hygiene, Woolf, Smack Wizards and Eternal Fags all performing across the space's several rooms.

So yes, we're guaranteeing the most fun April Fools' Day ever, along with it's confused Saturday brother. Feeling hungry? Let's reap the Spaghetti grove!

KIT & PLUG ON FILM

If you like what you see and hear, both records are in the shop right now.

'NEW LOVE.' OUT TODAY

On the journey, he's joined by long-term collaborators Nika Roza Danilova of Zola Jesus and Jamie Stewart of Xiu Xiu, along with first-timer, Yasmine Kittles of Tearist.

It's available of CD and LP - both £10 postage paid in the UK. A sneak peak is below...

31 October 2010

Trash Kit have returned with a new 7" single bearing two of their finest tracks yet.

The 7" is limited to 500 copies on transulcent orange vinyl and available in the shop right now and all good record stores on Monday.

The digital version is accompanied by an exclusive song entitled 'Happy New Year', taken from the same session as their album and included recently on their tour-only cassette compilation.

KIT'S 'INVOCATION' OUT NOW

17 October 2010

'INVOCATION' - the second full-length from Los Angeles quartet KIT - is out tomorrow and available in the shop right now.

Recorded at the Department of Safety in Anacortes, Washington by Phil Elverum, the album sees the band in a decidedly more reflective and considered mood.

Rooted in the occult and metaphysics, it's drenched in West Coast sunshine noir - a contradiction of excessive over-the-top speed-demon pop and ominous leviathans lurking right below the surface.

It's £10 postage paid in the UK. Have a listen below...

PLEASE RELEASE ME

8 August 2009

We have so many releases coming up, we wanted to make a general noise about them so you have the scoop first.

Hands On Heads have a new album out this week through us. It's called 'Tough Fun' and writes their name in the sky with unlucky stars. It's a brilliant, oft-pop record and is also a fitting goodbye, as they self-sacrifice at the end of this month.

Former Ghosts have just sent us the tapes of their new record called 'Fleurs' which is the most brutal and beautiful record we've heard in a long time.

Right now Trash Kit are recording their debut album for UTR in the countryside. There's a lot of one take wonders and more than 20 tracks in the can so it's looking more than promising!

If that wasn't enough, both Gay Against You and Foot Village have albums coming out imminently, while the first album proper from The Sticks will be released next month on CD and double 7" too.

True to our word there's lots going on. Look out for our Smiths tribute 7" from Xiu Xiu and Parenthetical Girls too. A cherry for every cake!

US of A

8 August 2009

We are finally putting together the photographs and video from our trip to the USA. Photographs of the shows are up on Flickr and we hope to get the videos on YouTube shortly. In addition, we are writing a tour report for the blog - the first episode is up already, with more to follow!

12 June 2009

Yeah, we have two European tours kicking off this Saturday! The first is for T.I.T.S, which will see the four ladies of San Francisco bring their witchy, doom-laden pop first to the UK, then France and Germany, in support of sophomore LP 'Second Base' for UTR.

THREE NEW THINGS FOR SALE

6 May 2009

We have two brand new releases and a shirt available in the shop right now.

The first is the 'Feathers & Hallways' double A-side 7" from Future Islands. It offers us a glimpse at the poetic grandeur and heartfelt melody that their forthcoming second album is readying, and is the band's first release as a focussed three-piece.

Clasping beats and a buoyant bass and synth interplay set up the perfect backdrop for vocalist Sam Herring's extraordinary vocal delivery, at once tender, then joyous, then wounded - an impression of what true love can be when left to instinct.

The second is the fifth full-length album from Chicago's perfectly off-centre pop band Bird Names. 'Sings The Browns' is a sky's the limit album scribbled in loose, intuitive musicianship, reinforced by an ethos of radical unconscious play.

Inspired by street level living, emotional complexities and a quest to find a language to express the inexpressible, Bird Names like to cover a lot of ground - early female vocal pop, Fela Kuti, old folk, Patti Paige, honky tonk country, doo wop, swing, classic dub, kraut rock, Beefheart and 80s college rock. It's initially available on digipack CD with an LP version to follow shortly.

Aside from the music, we also have a new T-shirt design from Hands On Heads in the distro section. It's a super fine, two colour print combining archaic garments with shadow puppets. Lovely!

THANK YOU!!!

30 March 2009

Just a quick note of thanks to everyone who came out to YES WAY this weekend, as well as to all of the artists who performed or exhibited, the lovely, lovely people at Auto-Italia, and our awesome sound crew!

We had much more fun than we could ever have imagined and we really hope you did too! Thanks so much to everyone involved!

T.I.T.S & WAVVES FOR SALE NOW

18 March 2009

We have two new awesome things in the shop right now! Firstly, 'Second Base' the sophomore release from the four ladies of San Francisco, T.I.T.S.

It follows their split album debut with Leopard Leg way back in 2006, drawing similarly from metal and doom, but stripping songs down to an icy core and pushing them into oblivion.

Chanted vocals, sparse, jarring guitars and a drum-centric focus all lend to a compelling sense of drama and impending ruin. Check out the 'Void' MP3 for a quick taster and then buy the beautiful, translucent blue LP here - £10 postage paid in the UK.

Secondly, we have a new T-shirt design courtesy of WAVVES's Nathan and Ryan. It features everyone's favourite teenage slogan "WAVVES 4 UPSET THE RHYTHM" accompanied by lots of good stuff like UFOs, bongs, CND signs and happy, sunny faces.

It's available in four sizes with pink print on a lovely cotton, sky blue shirt - £12 including worldwide postage.

We are super ecstatic to announce YES WAY - a two day festival celebrating the best and brightest of the UK's art and music underground, set to take place on Saturday 28 and Sunday 29 March.

Over the course of the weekend, 34 acts from all over the country will be performing, from noon
